Referees

Mandatory Meeting for New and Returning Referees
Meetings will be scheduled prior to each season. All referees, new and old, need to attend the meeting to work each season. Email Scott at spierce@ymca-portland.org to express an interest and to reserve your spot.

About our Program
The YMCA provides basketball and indoor soccer referees for girls and boys in grades 3rd, 4th and 5th. We do not keep score for any of the games; the YMCA philosophy is “Everyone plays, Everyone Wins.” We ask that all referees remember this philosophy and encourage and support the players and coaches accordingly.

All games are played in the Beaverton School district on Saturdays. Typically you would work a full day on Saturday (9 – 5) with two other referees. Two are on the floor calling the game and the other is keeping track of the possession arrow and game timer. The referees rotate after each game. All three referees are paid for the entire day minus a half hour lunch. All inexperienced referees start out making $8.00 per hour and will be evaluated each seasons for a pay increase.

All referees will be given a striped shirt, whistle and stop watch which will be required for all games. You will also receive a membershiip to the YMCA during the season.
